Structure and Dynamics of Energy Storage Materials
NIST Center for Neutron Research
NIST only participates in the February and August reviews.
Using neutron scattering techniques, we hope to understand the fundamental properties of adsorption, such as in metal-organic frameworks and use this information to steer synthesis techniques to produce more promising storage materials. Hydrogen, CO2, and methane interactions with the host are probed using neutron diffraction and spectroscopic techniques. Detailed information on atom location, adsorption sites, local potentials, and nanoscale diffusion mechanisms are extracted. We expect to see a significant improvement in the understanding of underlying chemical and physical processes in these materials.
