Description

Because of their inherent flexibility and reusability, robotic systems are uniquely suited to accelerating manufacturing productivity, quality, and competitiveness. To succeed, robotic systems need to be highly-capable, agile, perceptive, dexterous, mobile systems that can operate safely in collaboration with humans or other robots. NIST’s Robotic Systems for Smart Manufacturing Program is developing the measurement science needed to enable manufacturers to characterize and understand the performance of robotics systems within their enterprises.

We are interested in projects that focus on the development and application of performance metrics, information models, test methods, and protocols to assess and assure the key attributes of robotic systems. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to, robot mobility, grasping dexterity, human-robot and robot-robot collaboration, agility, and interoperability.

Our facilities include multiple laboratories featuring a range of collaborative and non-collaborative robots, industrial autonomous vehicles, mobile robots, mobile manipulators, state-of-the-art sensors, robotic hands with bio-inspired sensors, and novel human-robot interaction devices.
