Interaction between the atmosphere and ocean in the tropics is central to understanding and predicting Earth’s global weather-climate system. Observations of detailed air-sea interaction processes require simultaneous measurement of the upper ocean, air-sea interface, and the marine atmospheric boundary layer, together known as the air-sea transition zone. These observations have been made using a combination of variety of traditional and novel approaches. This research project provides opportunities of participation in ship cruises and operations of uncrewed systems to observed air-sea interaction under different environmental conditions. Selected candidate will

(1)   Take atmospheric sounding and ocean CTD measurement during a ship cruise in the tropics. Perform real-time data analysis of the air-sea transition zone during a research cruise. Conduct post-cruise data quality control and prepare data release for public use. 

(2)   Guide saildrone observations in coordination with other uncrewed systems (e.g., ocean gliders, airdrones). Perform real-time data analysis. Conduct post-field data quality control and prepare data release for public use. 

(3)   Conduct detailed data analysis using the field observations to explore air-sea interaction in the air-sea transition zone and validate such processes reproduced by numerical models. 

(4)   Present research results through attending conferences and publishing in scientific journals. 

 

Qualifications of the successful candidate for this project include (a) experiences in field measurement, quality control of atmospheric sounding data and air-sea interaction observations, (b) independence in research thinking and teamwork attitude, (c) effective oral and written communication skills, and (d) an excellent record of journal publications in comparison to peers . The research opportunity is original for one year, renewable depending on the availability of funding and performance.
