The NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science Beaufort Lab conducts basic and applied research on: 1) the response of intertidal habitats to sea level rise and other climate change-related stressors, and 2) the efficacy of adaptive management strategies to mitigate the impacts of these stressors. We examine the impact of environmental drivers on ecosystem response variables, including primary production, areal distribution of specific habitats, carbon burial and flux, sediment chemistry, and species composition. These results can be utilized in predictive models of habitat distribution and utilization under different climate change scenarios. Our current project is to determine the best environmental assessment approach to inform the design and implementation of Natural and Nature-Based Features for enhanced coastal resilience, with a focus on beneficial use of dredged sediment.   Applicants should have a strong background in one or more of the following areas; coastal wetland ecology, biogeochemistry,  GIS analysis, geospatial and/or numerical modeling, R, Python, Matlab programming, multivariate statistical analysis. The applicant will have the opportunity to interact with collaborators in the academic and private sectors, and may target one of several research directions relevant to overall program goals.

salt marsh; dynamic models; ecosystem models; coastal wetlands; sea level rise; carbon sequestration; coastal resource management; sediments
