Description

This opportunity includes possible contributions to several research initiatives related to phytoplankton interactions with molluscan aquaculture systems, including hatchery and nursery feeding and nutrition as well as grow-out and interactions with natural plankton communities and nutrient cycles. Laboratory studies include investigations of large-scale microalgal production systems and control of quantity and nutritional quality of microalgal biomass, as welll as physiological consequences of nutritional input in molluscan shellfish fed or exposed to feed cultures or harmful algal species. In field studies, we are quantifying impacts of molluscan aquaculture on the ecosystems in which shellfish farms are located, including particle filtration, assimilation and recycling of nutrients, biodeposition, and uses of harvested bivalve biomass. Studies of nutrient bio-extraction employing bivalve species not intended for human consumption, and subsequent use of this biomass in formulated finfish feeds, are included in this latter category.

This work benefits from a collection of microalgal strains, unique mass-culture facilities, specialized equipment such as computer-controlled feeding/exposure apparatus for invertebrates, portable and sorting flow cytometers, a fully-functional molecular-biology laboratory, and the availability of test organisms and advice in many disciplines from other Milford staff and many outside collaborators. Opportunities to contribute to ongoing projects or for self-generated questions are possible.
