We conduct long-term cetacean and ecosystem assessment surveys in the eastern tropical Pacific and California Current to monitor the status of protected species and to sample the ecosystem of which they are a part. A wealth of data on physical and biological oceanography, mid trophic-level fishes and squids, and apex predators in large (2-20 million square km), oceanic ecosystems are collected with each survey and used to assess abundance, distribution, species-habitat relationships, and trends over time. This research provides the opportunity to investigate oceanic ecosystems including ecology of single species or taxa, species interactions and food web dynamics, species diversity patterns, and trends over time. Both empirical and theoretical research problems are available.
