Description

The Seafloor Sciences Branch of the Ocean Sciences Division performs basic and applied research leading to advanced technology development and demonstration and validation efforts focusing on the physical, mechanical, and acoustical properties of seafloor, estuarine, and riverine sediments. We use a combination of high-performance computing simulations and numerical modeling, detailed laboratory measurements, and field experiments. We seek qualified applicants with experience performing time series analysis to quantify turbulent bottom boundary layer processes resulting from the interactions of waves, currents, and bed roughness. Scientific investigations focused on the intersection of geotechnical and geoacoutical sedimentary processes are of particular interest. Opportunities exist for applicants to propose and execute their own field and/or laboratory experiments. A wide variety of acoustic and optical instrumentation is available for use. Measurements are typically focused on shallow water environments (depths < 50 m). Experience deploying instrumentation at sea or working with instrumentation in the laboratory is desired, but not a requirement.
