Description

Synthesis and Performance Characterization of Ultra-high Temperature Ceramic Composites

This basic and applied research opportunity invites the applicant to define a research program that investigates the synthesis of multicomponent ultra-high temperature ceramic composites, to include fiber-reinforced and multi-phase composites with MAX phases. It is expected that key variables in the process will be modelled, e.g., sintering curves, and relevant mechanisms identified. The ideal candidate will have background knowledge in ceramic processing, ultra-high temperature ceramics and solid-state synthesis methods. Additionally the candidate will inform design of experiments to characterize the mechanical and oxidation performance of these ceramics in environments relevant to the application. The candidate will have access to experts in ceramic synthesis and a suite of equipment and instruments that will enable this work, but are encouraged to contact the advisor to discuss their approach. Potential applications for these materials range from the aerospace to energy sectors. This work is envisioned to have impact on multiple programs both within NRL and across the DOD.
