Description

We at NRL are developing three-dimensional materials characterization and analysis techniques to explore fundamental material characteristics and structure-property relationships in Naval materials. Current efforts include 3D data collection using serial sectioning, dual-beam focused ion beam (FIB) analysis, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and x-ray computed microtomography; image processing and data analysis; crystallographic analysis; and material response simulation using finite element modeling. We are particularly interested in the 3D structural characterization of both single and multicomponent systems, analysis of grain/interphase boundaries, and determination of their influence on observed materials properties. Materials of interest include structural and multifunctional metals and alloys, composites, ceramics, and porous materials.
