Description

This research opportunity focuses on the fundamental nature of intense ultrashort laser pulses interacting with atoms, molecules, clusters, plasmas, and solids. Because the electromagnetic radiation fields associated with the laser pulse are 10-100 times greater than the field associated with the electrostatic forces keeping atomic constituents together, this research will center on a challenging region of physics. Topics include experimental and theoretical problems in multiphoton physics, including ionization, Above Threshold Ionization, harmonic generation, intense field effects on atomic structure and processes, laser target physics, powerful x-ray sources associated with high-density plasma environments, plasma spectroscopy, x-ray lasers, and laser induced nuclear processes.
