This program focuses on using high-energy lasers for Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) research. NRL has a 3-kJ krypton-fluoride laser facility capable of extremely uniform illumination of targets at high intensity. Current research areas include hydrodynamic instabilities in laser accelerated targets, atomic physics of laser generated plasmas, equations of state of materials relevant to ICF such as liquid deuterium and low-density foams, the physics of laser-plasma interactions, and energy applications of ICF.
