Description

This research program seeks to develop an improved understanding of the atmospheric chemistry and aerosol deposition processes which contribute to corrosion-related phenomena in the Navy. Of high interest are atmospheric chloride and sulfur-containing species which are borne from sea spray activity. Our approach combines ion chromatography, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical techniques, and modeling to predict the deposition rates onto surfaces and the resulting corrosion dependencies of materials of interest. Further development into controlled, reproducible test methods which mimic real-world conditions are desired.
