Description

Future Naval Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (UUVs) require longer endurance than is currently available using state-of-the-art battery systems. Fuel cells are currently being investigated as a means to increase the energy density stored onboard. Therefore, hydrogen and oxygen storage for underwater systems has become a real interest and poses many challenging scientific and technical issues. This research opportunity would address the storage of fuels and/or oxidizers for undersea fuel cell technologies from a basic science prospective.

Available facilities include a new state-of-the-art building dedicated to nanoscale science and technology research that is equipped with a wide range of processing and surface science analysis equipment.
