Description

Research opportunities are available to advance the measurement of fluid flow, airspeed, liquid density and volume, and the measurement and quantum mechanical calculation of the fundamental thermodynamic and transport properties of process gases. We are particularly interested in the development of next-generation standards for measuring flow including (1) the use of critical venturis and/or ultrasonic flow meters as primary flow standards, (2) CFD modeling validated by experiments characterizing how installation effects (i.e., swirl, asymmetric velocity profile, unsteady flow) effect the performance of various flow meter types (e.g., turbine meters, critical venturis, ultrasonic flow meters), (3) development of theoretical models validated by experiments that accurately predict changes in flow meter performance for different fluids, and (4) development of flow measurement techniques to provide low uncertainty measurement of smokestack green house gas emissions.
