Description

There is increasing interest in alternative energy sources in response to concerns about climate change, and the availability and cost of traditional petroleum-based energy sources. Possible replacements include fuels obtained from biological sources, hydrogen, and coal and natural-gas based fluids coupled with carbon sequestration. Models for thermophysical properties assist in the development and utilization of these new fuels. Knowledge of physical properties is needed in the processing and use of these new fuels. We are developing equation of state based models for the thermodynamic properties of both pure fluids and complex mixtures involved in the new energy economy. We are also exploring properties issues throughout the product stream, from pre-processing of the raw material to the effluent from the use of the fuels. Some of the challenges associated with efficient use of cellulosic materials involve solubilities, as well as chemical, thermochemical, and biochemical reaction systems. Modeling approaches range from classical property models to advanced theory and computer simulation.
