Description

Research opportunities are available to elucidate the reaction mechanisms, thermochemistry, and time-dependent phenomena of chemical reactions related to energy transformation, advanced manufacturing, security, and the environment. Projects focus on the development and application of real-time, in-situ, advanced measurement capabilities to study rate constants, transport properties, and the transformation of chemical species in the gas and liquid phases, in plasmas, and at surfaces. Example projects include the investigation of surface and gas phase processes occurring during thermal chemical vapor deposition and atomic layer deposition used in nanoelectronics fabrication; the examination of aerosol chemistry and aerosol chemical and physical properties relevant to understanding and predicting climate change; the measurement of the chemical kinetics and mechanisms of elementary gas-phase reactions and model systems for heterogeneous catalysis; and the examination of reaction models used to optimize reaction efficiencies and pathways in chemical systems. A wide variety of diagnostic equipment is available including ultrasensitive cavity-enhanced laser-based methods, optical spectroscopies (infrared, visible, ultraviolet, Raman, light scattering), gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS).
