NIST only participates in the February and August reviews.
We are interested in the development and application of non-destructive methods for elucidation of chemical species and quantification of individual species in a wide variety of materials. Key areas of interest include product safety, hazardous materials, clinical test methods, food safety, dietary supplements, environmental test methods, geological materials, and more. While research projects involving any aspect of speciation in natural and man-made systems will be considered, the ultimate goal is to provide reference test methods to the benefit of all academic, business, and government researchers. New methods and applications will take advantage of the state-of-the-art synchrotron X-ray beamline facilities, operated by NIST at Brookhaven National Laboratory, to perform X-ray absorption near edge spectrometry (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) experiments. Supporting facilities available at the NIST Gaithersburg laboratories include X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry, microXRF and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectrometric methods, coupled with chromatographic techniques.
