Description

Next generation manufacturing combines current metals additive manufacturing methods with various in situ energy sources (thermal, mechanical, magnetic, electrical) to tailor the properties of a material for a desired application. This research focuses on developing and characterizing how directed energy deposition methods can be combined with other energy sources to control the solidification and precipitation behavior in novel materials.  The specific in situ secondary processing mechanisms of interest include controlled heating and/or cooling, deformation, or magnetic effects to prioritize selected phase transformations during the build process.  In addition to these secondary processing mechanisms, improved control of the primary energy source for establishing the melt pool is needed to improve surface properties and control solidification mechanisms, and new calibration procedures must be developed.  The new hybrid AM processing methods will be instrumented and characterized using a variety of experimental techniques and computational models.
