Spin-orbit Phenomena in Magnetic Thin Films Coupled with Low-Dimensional Materials for Spintronics

We are measuring the dynamic properties of continuous magnetic thin films integrated with low-dimensional materials to advance testbeds for ultralow energy-delay product spintronic devices that result from the spin-orbit interaction. We are interested in understanding the strength and direction of spin-orbit torques at interfaces between ferromagnets (FM) and two-dimensional (2D) materials and how SOT relates to the interfacial properties of the heterostructure. FM/2D heterostructures are fabricated with our 2D and Quantum Materials Foundry and the Magnetic Engineering Research Facility as well as a fully equipped nanofab that includes a state-of-the-art e-beam lithography and heterostructure stacking tools. Material characterization is performed with x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, various magnetometers, magnetic domain imaging and ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy.
