Description
Biocatalytic synthesis of polymers is important to making functional materials under environmentally benign conditions for various applications. The enzyme catalyzed syntheses of non-halogenated polymers have great potential as flame retardant (FR) materials. The thermal and flame-retardant properties of these polymers can be further improved by cross-linking techniques; incorporating inherently fire-safe elements such as silicon, boron, and phosphorous, sulfur and making their organoclay nanocomposites.
Research will focus on (1) eco-friendly “green” synthesis and characterization of existing and new polymeric materials and their formulations for inherently fire safe materials as textile coatings and fiber processing and (2) development of efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective processing methodologies for FR textile applications.
