Description

This research concerns severe convection using observations, numerical simulations, and theory to understand the ingredients necessary for severe convective events. Although our main emphasis is on supercell thunderstorms and tornadoes, work includes studies on the full spectrum of severe convective weather, including damaging convective winds, large hail, and heavy precipitation. We are primarily interested in using new operational observing systems to accomplish basic research and to improve the operational prediction of these storms. Both cloud-scale and mesoscale numerical models are used to explore the relationship between the storms and their environment. Related work focuses on exploring various aspects of objective analysis procedures to provide quantitative analytical tools for the diagnosis of severe convection and its environment, and in the analysis of convective environments through re-analysis data.
