Description

Research is conducted on characterizing the structure and dynamics of Earth’s magnetosphere, and on monitoring and forecasting the magnetospheric response to variable solar wind conditions. We pursue theory, modeling, and data analysis efforts on phenomena such as storms, substorms, geomagnetic variations, wave-particle interactions, magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling processes, and the charged particle environment surrounding Earth. NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center data include geosynchronous magnetic field and energetic particles from the GOES satellite series and charged particle data from the POES (polar orbiting) satellite series. Real-time solar wind parameters and other relevant data from the NASA ACE satellites are also available.
