AFRL is investigating nano-optical devices, such as metamaterials and photonic crystals, to develop smaller optical systems and gain better control of a wide band of the electromagnetic spectrum. Our research interests involve developing novel devices utilizing, for example, spatially varying lattices, bio-inspired deformities in photonic crystals, plasmonic/photonic crystal sensors, and hybrid systems that combine metallic (plasmonic) and dielectric metasurfaces.
We are seeking highly-motivated and dynamic researchers to work alongside us on the design and analysis of nano-optical systems and sensors that are of immediate applicability to USAF systems. The candidate should have a Ph.D in nano-optics or closely related fields, with focus on nanomaterials modeling and design. A strong modeling and simulations background is required in programming languages such as C/C++, CUDA, Python, or Julia, or in commercial packages such as COMSOL or ANSYS HSFF. Knowledge of ray-tracing, optical systems design and characterization, and fabrication techniques such as multi-photon lithography are highly desired.
