Description

The next generation of polymer matrix composite materials would benefit greatly from non-invasive, in-situ cure monitoring, higher temperature capability and improved processing. To achieve these goals, the synthesis of chiral molecules/polymers are sought that provide: 1) mechanical actuation during cure leading to a detectable optical, conductive or magnetic response through composite thickness; 2) non-planar, graphene-like monomers; 3) oligomers that form poly-helicene reinforcing fibers with large persistent lengths. This research opportunity seeks candidates with a background in synthetic chemistry and materials characterization, including but not limited to, NMR, optical and thermal methods.
