Description

The increased technical challenges and costs incurred in efforts to scale CMOS technology into the nanometer scale have spurred interest in emerging alternative technologies, particularly for nanotechnologies that promise self assembly and scalability well into the future. The semiconductor industry entered the nanotechnology world with the introduction of the 130 nm node with 70 nm gate length in 2000. Industry leaders see computer architectures developed with new scalable technologies emerging from novel alternative fabrication materials and techniques. These include the functionalization and placement of carbon nanotubes, molecule based electronics, and complex nanoscale computing devices. We are particularly interested in the advancement of computing architecture paradigms through (1) the formulation of novel approaches for examining, interrogating, and manipulating the physical (e.g. structural, electro-mechanical) aspects of nanoscale systems; (2) the development of new protocols for investigating and exploiting nanosubstrate interactions including adhesion, preferential attachment and structural analysis; and/or (3) the design and demonstration of useful architectures and systems that integrate nanometer scale controllability and atomic level know-how with the exotic properties and revolutionary functionalities of electronic, chemical, electrochemical, and nano materials.
