The enhanced tactical communication interfaces research program primarily focuses on the evaluation of advanced communication technologies that may extend the effectiveness and capabilities of operators working within a collaborative, network-centric, team decision making framework. Work domains such as these are characteristically communication-intense, fast-paced, rapidly changing, and replete with information that can often be incomplete, inaccurate, and uncertain. An applied research approach is used to study how state-of-the art-communication technology affects individual and team workload, shared mental models and awareness, communication effectiveness, attentional capacity, error propagation, problem solving, and decision making. Research topics of particular interest to our program include theoretically-guided investigations of the cognitive and psychological factors involved in automation and decision support; collaboration and communication effectiveness; and metrics for characterizing individual and team decision effectiveness, workload, and shared awareness.
