Associateship Programs at National Institutes of Health (NIH)

The NIH Research Associateship Program in Biomedical Research is designed primarily for individuals who have less than five years of relevant research experience since receipt of the doctoral degree.

These awards, called Postdoctoral Research Associateships, are made initially for one year and may be extended to a second and third year, depending on an annual review of an Associate’s research activities and the availability of resources at NIH.

The NIH also confers a number of Senior Research Associateships, which are awarded only to applicants who have held the doctorate five years or more at the time of application or are recognized as established investigators in their specialized fields.

Although awards to Senior Research Associates are usually for one year, awards for periods of three months or longer may be considered.

Opportunities at NIH are open to all citizens of the United States and to citizens of other countries who have full command of the English language.
