Description

This theoretical/computational research program studies the Earth’s radiation belt environment which is known to trap energetic electrons for a very long duration. In particular, the focus is on active remediation of the high-energy (~MeV) electrons which may be trapped in this region in the aftermath of a high-altitude nuclear explosion. We are investigating the physics of whistler wave amplification by the free energy available in a nuclear enhanced radiation belt, triggered emission, and the consequent enhancement of pitch angle scattering of the energetic electrons. We are also investigating the possibility of ULF turbulence and consequent pitch angle scattering by releasing chemicals in the radiation belt. The ultimate objective is to understand the physics and obtain quantitative scaling laws determining the amplification of launched electromagnetic waves and to utilize these to develop viable active remediation schemes.
