Hyperspectral Characterization of the Coastal Regime
Naval Research Laboratory, DC, Remote Sensing
The hyperspectral optics program at NRL's Remote Sensing Division focuses on relating observations of the optical properties of the open ocean and coastal waters to underlying physical and biological processes. This program takes advantage of a variety of airborne and satellite remote-sensing systems. The research centers on radiative transfer modeling of oceanic hyperspectral signatures (both in water and atmospheric) with emphasis on the complex coastal regime and on validating these models through remote and in situ observations. Properly compensating for atmospheric effects is difficult and overcoming the associated roadblocks is am important part of this work.
Available instrumentation includes an extensive series of aircraft based hyperspectral and multispectral systems, field spectrometers for on-site signature measurements, in-water optical profiling systems, and state-of-the-art calibration facilities.
