Description

Microfluidic systems and many biomimetic self-assembled particles have equivalent characteristic length scales allowing for the two classes of systems to work together in new and interesting ways. We are interested in using the unique physics of fluid flow, mass transfer, heat transfer, and reaction kinetics that microfluidic systems facilitate to study the self-assembly of supra molecular systems including liposomes, lipid tubules, protein-based therapeutics, as well as other material systems. We have recently used microfluidics to support understanding the aggregation of protein therapeutics; an area of critical research in the biopharmaceutical community. We are also interested in the unique features of nano and microscale self-assembled biomimetic particles to facilitate and control events in microfluidic systems. This includes, but is not limited to, molecular recognition, detection of toxins and biowarfare agents, DNA analysis, nanofabrication, single-cell assays, and cell culture. Our research group and projects are highly interdisciplinary; therefore, we are seeking applicants from many backgrounds including chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, material science, electrical engineering, chemistry, mechanical engineering, physics, and biology.
