Short- and long-term changes in tropospheric aerosols are studied by surface and airborne instruments, from fixed ground stations and aircraft. Long-term monitoring of aerosol properties at the surface, in clean and anthropogenically-perturbed regions, is under way in order to assess their effects on Earth’s radiative balance. A major focus is on measurements of the regional, vertical, and temporal variability of the aerosol radiative properties that are needed to calculate the climate forcing. Projects are encouraged that combine the measurements with chemical transport model results and satellite observations. We are particularly interested in the development and application of new techniques for measuring aerosol radiative properties, such as the angular distribution of scattered light and the dependence of aerosol scattering and absorption on relative humidity. Other areas of interest include development and application of new techniques for measuring aerosol size distribution, cloud condensation nucleus concentration, and chemical composition.

Experience Supplement:
Postdoctoral and Senior Associates will receive an appropriately higher stipend based on the number of years of experience past their PhD.
