Description

The field of communications and sensing continues to extend into UV, EUV, far IR, and visible frequency bands. However, there is a clear gap when it comes to terahertz frequencies. This gap stems from limited sensors and sources available in this range. A terahertz source with sufficient power could change the landscape of material characterization, communications, and sensing. We see an opportunity to develop a method to generate such a source utilizing Rydberg atoms. Over the past decade, rydberg atom sensors have been the center of many technological developments in sensing DC to terahertz radiation. They offer calibration methods for electric fields and serve as sensitive electric field probes, power sensors, voltage standards, and receivers for communications. We hope to turn these sensors, utilized for THz detection, into THz sources. We seek proposals for collaboration to develop Rydberg atom-based THz sources that will find use in several labs across NIST.
