Conventional and emerging helicopter designs rely on a multitude of mechanical interfaces and components, and the incorporation of electric systems has lagged that achieved in commercial fixed wing aircraft. Recent improvements in the specific power of electric machines, along with the advancement of energy storage and power conditioning for transportation, has resulted in a considerable amount of research and development of hybrid and all-electric small aircraft.

We conduct fundamental and applied research enabling distribution and transfer of propulsive energy in uninhabited, personal, and crewed vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft in the 100-1000 kW power range. Reduction of mechanical interfaces in power transfer systems will result from increasing reliance on electric machines, non-contacting magnetic gears and other devices with increasingly relying on electromagnetic forces. A broad range of focused research topics may support this technology area, and multidisciplinary and collaborative approaches are highly encouraged.

NOTE: This opportunity may also be located at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, OH under a collaborative research arrangement between the Army Research Laboratory and the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate.
