Our goal is to develop improved optical methods for characterizing atmospheric particles, especially airborne biological particles. Recent efforts have involved developing fluorescence particle counters, which measure the elastic scattering and fluorescence (total and spectrally dispersed) of aerosol particles as they traverse a laser beam. Opportunities exist to develop optical methods for characterizing airborne particles.
