Research areas include second and third order optical nonlinearities of condensed matter, composite and polymer materials, and the unique properties of quantum wells grown by molecular beam epitaxy and metallo-organic chemical vapor deposition. Such properties are particularly promising because of the large nonlinearity associated with the quantum confined Stark effect. Emphasis is placed on extracting and optimizing the magnitude of the nonlinearity, response time, linear and nonlinear absorption losses, and saturation levels.
Facilities include a mode-locked Nd:YAG, pulse compressor, high-speed detectors, gas and dye lasers, spectrophotometer, thermal and e-beam evaporators, reactive ion etcher, and ion mills.
