Tribological Modeling of Material Degradation under Loss-of-Oil Conditions

Computational modeling and simulation studies are sought on physical and chemical failure mechanisms in high speed high load contacts under starved lubrication scenarios. A multidisciplinary modeling approach will combine different stages of failure such as behavior of the starved elastohydrodynamic lubricating film, surface chemistry of lubricant additives during mixed and boundary lubrication, initial stages of scuffing and oxidative wear, and continuum wear modes. Multiscale material modeling approaches, conjugate heat transfer models, multiphase computational fluid dynamics, molecular dynamics, and ab initio chemical models are examples of multidisciplinary methods that may be used.
Coordination of and integration with research conducted by government and university partners will be expected. The goal is to better understand experimental observations and develop predictive tools for improved operation of helicopter and ground vehicle drive system components (gears, bearings, transmissions) under loss-of-oil conditions with a focus on improving vehicle survivability.
NOTE: This opportunity may also be located at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, OH under a collaborative research arrangement between the Army Research Laboratory and the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate.
