The desire to design and develop reliable quantum networks to support quantum applications has been in the works by mathematicians, computer scientists, and physicists. The vision is to encode new network abstractions, algorithms, and configurations to build software defined programmable quantum networks that use unified control planes for transporting quantum metadata. The current research approach is to extend OpenFlow protocol to encode quantum metadata channels into quantum communication models. The following research opportunities exist in this area:
(1) Encoding of additional network abstractions to transport quantum metadata in a programmable quantum metadata channel. Validating the functional fidelity of the new labels through simulation using tools like NS3, Mininet, and numerical quantum network simulators.
(2) Development of new network transport algorithms and mathematical models to optimize the quantum metadata channel in a programmable quantum network. Investigation into resolving the timing issues between the quantum and classical channels.
(3) Extending the proposed programmable network model to quantum memory nodes by specifying the data structures to store quantum states. The work will build on prior protocols developed for transmitting and detecting quantum states and it will leverage recent advances in using OpenFlow controller to manage quantum switching. This cooperative research is in collaboration with ORNL, AFRL, and the University of Budapest Technology and Economics.
