Description

Trapped ions and ultracold atoms are versatile environments to study quantum information. Of particular interest are quantum systems capable of generating, storing, and processing entangled quantum information. Such systems may be integrated to form a scalable quantum network. We explore and develop quantum memories and the components needed for remote entanglement between quantum nodes, including quantum frequency conversion, high efficiency photon retrieval, and integrated retrieval, interference and detection of photon pairs. Trapped ions offer excellent control over qubits which may be leveraged for long-lived memories; Rydberg atoms afford possibilities in long-range networking and both systems can acts as quantum sensors.

Research opportunities are available in the following areas: trapped ion technology, ultracold and Rydberg atoms for quantum information processing, integrated optics and quantum communication. Internal research is in progress in these areas.
