Description

Using photonics to generate, transport, transmit, and process RF microwave signals can provide new functionalities, improve performance, and reduce size and weight for traditional RF electronic systems. Photonics offer extremely wide frequency bandwidth, ultralow loss, and extremely high quality fractor Q. We are developing these RF-photonic devices with fiber-optics and integrated photonic circuits.

This research focuses on the design, fabrication, and characterization of these RF-photonic devices such as opto-electronic oscillators, Free-space optical and RF-over-fiber links, RF-photonic signal correlators, optical true-time-delays for RF antenna beamforming, as well as novel semiconductor devices such as metastructure/metamaterial devices for RF-photonic applications. Our objective is to demonstrate integrated modules that can perform sophisticated functionality for RF photonic systems for applications such as positioning, navigation and timing(PNT), electronic warfare(EW), and next generation of RF-photonic sensors and Radars.
