Description

Research focuses on numerical modeling, coupled ocean-wave modeling, model verification, and real-time forecasting capabilities. A major goal of this research is to combine state-of-the-art data collection systems, numerical modeling, and data assimilation,  providing a coastal prediction system to forecast waves, circulation, and bathymetric evolution including uncertainty estimates on operational length and time scales.  Projects generally have one (or both) of two broad motivations: (1) improvement of modeling technology and improving accuracy of analyses and forecasts produced by the operational Navy, and (2) models as tools to study particular physical phenomena. A recurring theme of prior projects is the analysis, quantification, and ranking of varied sources of error in modeling applications of practical importance to the Navy. Opportunities exist to study new concepts, techniques, and hypotheses in geophysical fluid dynamics, especially for the coastal and nearshore region. Outstanding computer power is available ranging from the most advanced LINUX clusters to high-performance scalable computers. Excellent facilities are also available for analysis and display of model results and data.
