Description

A range of the electronic, optical, transport, and vibrational properties of semiconductor nanostructures is being investigated. Areas of current interest include (1) the optical, spin, and excitonic properties of quantum dots, coupled quantum dots and related nanostructures, including relaxation, decoherence, and hyperfine coupling of interest in quantum information; (2) entanglement and quantum gates in quantum information based on quantum dots, microcavities, and related systems; (3) photonic properties of semiconductor microcavities and photon bandgap systems and their role in quantum information; (4) electrical, thermal, thermoelectric, and spin transport in quantum wells and quantum wires; and (5) density functional calculations of electronic properties of graphene, carbon nanotubes, and related nanomaterials and their chemical functionalization and electrical transport in these systems. This work often collaborates with leading experimental work, particularly at NRL. Other areas studied in the recent past include surfaces and interfaces, magnetic materials, and amorphous systems.
