NPS is conducting research in remote-sensing techniques for terrain classification and target detection. This work focuses on the development of new approaches in the analysis of remote sensing data in three dimensions (3D), in particular the use of LIDAR, but also 3D information derived from airborne and satellite imagery (photogrammetric and computer vision techniques).
Work in LIDAR primarily focuses on small footprint systems, with applications to foliage penetration. We are particularly interested in waveform systems and have begun work on spectral lidar systems. Our airborne work with electro-optical and thermal imaging systems now extends to small UAV systems.
The Associate should have strong remote-sensing analysis skills, including a familiarity with the software package ENVI (from Harris). Experience with the analysis of lidar data is helpful, particularly QT Modeler or ENVI Lidar. Field experience in data collection efforts is important, potentially including work with survey grade GPS sysetms, terrestrial laser scanners, and field spectrometers.
