This project aims to develop neuromorphic systems based on a combination of Josephson junctions, magnetic Josephson junctions, single flux quantum technologies, and spintronic components. These technologies are neuromorphic at the device level with the potential to dramatically improve both speed and efficiency compared to modern CMOS. The use of magnetic Josephson junctions as synaptic components with reconfigurable memory enables new neuromorphic architectures. Spiking systems will be designed, modeled, fabricated and tested. Processing will be done in the NIST state-of-the-art clean room. Emphasis will be placed on developing stochastic spiking systems, liquid state machines, and artificial neural network-based architectures. Fundamental design and theory work is an essential component to adapt conventional neural architectures to those that are amenable for superconducting/spintronic systems.
