We are developing new magnetic nano-agents and the corresponding imaging tools for in-vivo applications including imaging, tracking, and manipulating individual molecules and cells. Program areas include micro/nanosystems utilizing synthesized or microfabricated magnetic nano-agents, advanced electromagnetic systems, and new imaging modalities and protocols that ultimately would be compatible with conventional MRI scanners. For example, we are interested in proposals regarding (1) engineering smart magnetic nano-agents that have greater functionality than those that currently exist; (2) new imaging and measurement techniques to locate nano-agents and possibly measure local physiological changes with them; and (3) new ways to activate and manipulate nano-agents in-vivo to direct cellular motion or functionality, or initiate cellular metabolic or genetic activity.
