New wireless devices are often multi-mode, multi-frequency, and multi-antenna, with the next generation of cell phones expected to operate in the millimeter-wave frequencies above 28 GHz. Verifying system-level specifications in over-the-air tests is difficult because of the high frequencies involved and the sheer number of potential operating states. This requires development of creative solutions for the measurement of broadband, high-dynamic-range signals, both in terms of intentional signals and distortion. Development of over-the-air measurement techniques that uncover key performance parameters for wireless systems at microwave and millimeter-wave frequencies will be the focus of the project. The work will provide a good mix of theoretical development and hands-on experiment in an area of intense commercial growth.
