Broadband Bioelectromagnetic Measurements

This opportunity focusses on the measurement of electromagnetic properties of biomaterials, validating in-vivo measurements of these properties, modeling the propagation of electromagnetic fields in humans with multiphysics and complex tissue models, and developing techniques to assess the effects of radio and microwave frequency fields on tissue. Electromagnetic properties include dielectric constant, conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility at frequencies from DC to 60 GHz. Properties will be measured using electron paramagnetic resonance, SQUID magnetometry, broadband electromagnetic characterization, nuclear magnetic resonance, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Tissue response will be assessed with a broad range of conventional assays, as well as with unique, real-time imaging assays. The first goal is to assess human safety under broadband RF exposure by developing more rigorous measurement techniques and to extend these techniques to in-vivo measurement of the effects of RF exposure on local metabolic processes, DNA defects, and implanted medical devices. The second goal is to develop novel methods to use RF radiation to interrogate and modify local tissue properties. This work will include the development of bioreactors and real-time monitoring of the effect of RF exposure in the NIST small-bore MRI scanner.
