Description

The Dynamic Mechanical Metrology project at NIST develops novel measurement techniques, physical standards and disseminates SI-traceability, for measurements of acceleration, sound and dynamic force. Cavity optomechanics can provide singular performance in sensitivity, intrinsic accuracy and bandwidth for mechanical sensing. These capabilities have begun to be exploited, but there remains a large potential for sensors and standards with a high impact in terms of performance and applications. NIST is a leader in optomechanical sensing, and we are engaged in applying optomechanical methods to primary measurements of sound, force and acceleration. We welcome interested experimentalists to work with us to achieve the highest-accuracy measurements.
