Identification of radionuclides in mixtures, and their accurate quantification (in units of Bq)  through full characterization of each decay, remains an open challenge that must be met to support the increasing uses of radioactivity in medicine and to meet demands for smaller uncertainties in manufacturing and nuclear security applications. No instrument today directly measures all decays in a sample with sufficient energy resolution to uniquely identify each radionuclide. This opportunity involves developing methods to embed radionuclides in micro-calorimeters in thermal contact with ultra-low temperature cryogenic Transition Edge Sensors (TES), and implementation of 4-pi decay-energy spectrometery to identify and quantify radionuclide samples. The research associate would work in collaboration with experts in the Radiation Physics Division and Quantum Electromagnetics Division, developing quantitative radioactive source preparation methods and participating in the design and micro-fabrication of TES sensors in a next-generation microelectronics cleanroom facility.
