Recent advances in nanofabrication and nanobiotechnology rely on biomacromolecules.  In nanofabrication, biomacromolecules are used to marry bottom-to-top self-assembly with top-down lithographic methods. In biotechnology, biomacromolecules at nanometer lengths scales are either themselves therapies (monoclonal antibodies) or are used in combination with nanoscale drug delivery vectors.  All these examples rely on nanoscale measurements to enable design and engineering of robust, reliable systems.  Our laboratory employs electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy (both a commercial system and a NIST-built system) to measure nanometer distances in “soft” nanomaterials using components unavailable on many other systems to improve resolution, signal to noise, and decrease the sampling time.  This project focuses on pulsed dipolar spectroscopic measurements on samples of importance to partners as well as the design and fabrication of test systems with which to further extend these difficult measurements and push the sensitivity and utility of the NIST-built EPR spectrometer system. We offer a supportive environment that couples multidisciplinary scientific interactions with advanced measurement and nanofabrication capabilities.
