Wireless communication systems are an essential component of national and global infrastructure, enabling new modes of communication, computing, and sensing and underpinning future robust autonomous delivery, distribution, and transportation systems. Key areas of wireless communications open for study include spectrum sensing, efficient (cognitive) spectral usage, characterization and exploitation of spectrum, and wireless coexistence. Communication is fundamentally statistical by nature, and this perspective necessarily underpins advanced studies.

High-quality measurement and assessment methods are necessary for the development and deployment of modern wireless technologies. The Communications Technology Laboratory (CTL) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a leading metrology center for wireless communications technology. The National Advanced Spectrum and Communications Test Network (NASCTN), administered by CTL, coordinates the development of test procedures and the collection of measurement data to accelerate the deployment of spectrum sharing technologies. This position includes the opportunity to gain practical experience with NASCTN and access to NASCTN resources.
